Saying Good-Bye

It’s with a heavy heart that we write today’s post, as the whole LRB family says good-bye to one of our youngest members—Cooper, Bella’s brother and one of Lola and Ryder’s puppies that we added to our clan, passed away today.

You may have seen Cooper gallivanting around in our puppy video: he’s the one with a baby face and legs for miles that he hadn’t quite grown into yet. As you can see in the picture, he’s a spitting image of Ryder, but with Lola’s pretty eyes. While he was growing up, every one in our family fell in love with his gentle nature, and the way he awkwardly moved around with his giraffe legs put a smile on all of our faces.

Though we were sad to give him away, Cooper was adopted by a great, loving family who welcomed him into their home and their lives. He lived a life surrounded by friends and family who absolutely adored him, just as we did. He touched so many people’s lives, and his owner, who called to give us the news, told us that he never realized he could feel so close to a dog. He was 4 years old.

Unlike humans, the life of a dog is short, and in the lifetime, a pet owner must see off one-too-many of our furry friends. This is especially hard when we’ve given a piece of our heart to them, and when they leave us, as they all must, they leave behind a gaping hole that feels like it’s much too big to fill. But we have to remember that the reason we miss them is because they gave us so much more than what’s been lost, and that’s why we continue to seek companionship in pets—even though we know that one day, a day that’s not too far away and always comes too fast, they will no longer be with us. Cooper’s time with us was short, but he was truly loved and he loved deeply in return. I suppose there’s not much more you could ask for in one’s life.

Today, I hope we can take this as an opportunity to spoil your already rotten animals a little bit—let them stay outside for a little longer, sleep on your bed for one night, take just one more bite of that leftover they shouldn’t be eating, lick your face without pushing them away even if they have poop breath. And in that moment, I hope you will think of Cooper and all the other little beasts that have passed on, and be as loyal to their memory as they were to us.
